A Growing Public Health Concern
A recent measles outbreak in Texas and surrounding states has resulted in nearly 500 confirmed cases and at least three tragic deaths. The majority of cases are occurring in unvaccinated individuals, sparking national concern—and a vital conversation about the importance of immunization.
At Link Primary Care in St. Louis, we’re paying close attention to this alarming development. As a direct primary care practice committed to preventive care, we want our community to stay informed and protected.
What Is Measles?
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through coughing, sneezing, or direct contact with an infected person. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area and is highly infectious.
Symptoms typically include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- A distinctive red rash that spreads over the body
Complications can include ear infections, pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death—especially in young children and immunocompromised individuals.
How Did the Outbreak Happen?
Several states including Texas have seen a decline in childhood vaccination rates over the past few years, with increasing numbers of parents choosing to opt out of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. This drop in immunization creates gaps in immunity, making outbreaks more likely.
Similar concerns are rising here in Missouri, where childhood vaccination rates have also declined. That’s why it’s more important than ever for St. Louis families to stay on top of their immunization schedules.
What You Can Do to Protect Your Family
Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles. The CDC recommends children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine:
- The first dose at 12–15 months
- The second dose at 4–6 years old
Adults who haven’t been vaccinated or are unsure of their status should speak with their doctor, as adult vaccination is also an option. At Link Primary Care, we offer easy access to:
- Pediatric and adult immunizations
- Same-day appointments
- Personalized vaccine consultations
Patient Story: Finding Peace of Mind
A St. Louis mom recently brought her two young children to Link Primary Care after learning about the Texas outbreak. She was unsure if her kids were fully protected. After a thorough review and reassurance from Dr. David Bereda, her children received their needed boosters.
“The visit was calm, informative, and I finally felt confident my kids were safe. I wish I’d switched to Link Primary Care sooner.”
